Solar loan & EMI explained: how much will you pay each month?

Ek saath paisa nahi hai? How a solar loan works, how EMI is calculated, how the subsidy lowers it, and why your bill saving pays most of the EMI.

Solar loan & EMI explained: how much will you pay each month?
Quick answer: with a bank loan, rooftop solar for a home usually comes to an EMI of about ₹1,500–2,000 a month. Your EMI depends on three things — loan amount, interest rate and tenure. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy (up to ₹78,000) comes to your bank account after the net meter, and many families put it into the loan to cut the EMI. Try your own numbers on our EMI calculator.

Bahut log solar isliye nahi lagwate kyunki ek saath ₹1,80,000 dena mushkil lagta hai. The good news: you don't have to. Banks give solar loans, and the monthly saving on your bill covers a big part of the EMI.

How is EMI calculated?

Banks use one standard formula:

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1)
  • P = loan amount
  • r = monthly interest rate = yearly rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100
  • n = number of months (for example 10 years = 120 months)

With a fixed rate every EMI is the same amount. In the early months a bigger part goes to interest; later, more of it repays the principal. You don't need to do this maths by hand — our EMI calculator shows the EMI, total interest and a year-wise schedule instantly.

A 3 kW example

A typical 3 kW on-grid system costs about ₹1,80,000 (indicative, GST included). Open the EMI calculator — the solar tab already starts with this amount — and move the sliders for rate and tenure.

Two ways to plan it:

  • Loan on the full price, then use the ₹78,000 subsidy (when it arrives) to prepay the loan
  • Loan on the price after subsidy (about ₹1,02,000) if you can arrange the subsidy amount in between — the EMI is much smaller

The calculator's "after subsidy" view shows both.

Your bill pays a big part of the EMI

A 3 kW system makes about 405 units a month. At ₹7/unit, that is about ₹2,835 saved every month. So for many homes, the EMI is close to the bill they were already paying — and once the loan ends, the bijli is practically free for the remaining life of the panels.

Which banks give solar loans?

Public-sector banks such as SBI and PNB, and gramin banks, offer solar loans for homes under PM Surya Ghar, usually at a lower rate than a personal loan. The exact rate depends on the bank and changes with the RBI repo rate — your sanction letter shows the final rate.

Documents for a solar loan

Usually the same as the subsidy file — Aadhaar, PAN, latest electricity bill, bank passbook, photos — plus the vendor quotation. Zento Solar prepares the quotation and loan file with you and coordinates with the bank.

Tips for a smaller EMI

  • Choose the right size — not too big. See how many kW you need
  • Put the subsidy into the loan as soon as it arrives
  • A slightly longer tenure lowers the EMI (but adds interest) — compare both on the calculator
